When it comes to pork, the Ländle is purely an import country. Dairy farming dominates. The Liberals now want to change that.
Pig farming in Vorarlberg state has declined rapidly in recent years and decades. Liberal agriculture spokesman Daniel Allgäuer calculates that in 1970 36,751 pigs were kept in Vorarlberg, now there are only 6377. The degree of self-sufficiency in pork is less than five percent in the state, so without imports Vorarlbergers would have to do without schnitzel and such.
The FPÖ is now campaigning to make pig farming attractive again. And animal-friendly, without fully slatted floors. This circumstance should then be clearly communicated to the consumer, says Allgäuer: “Local farmers who invest in species- and animal-friendly pig farming should also receive appropriate support.”
The public sector must join in
Allgäuer also sees opportunities to ensure safe sales for farmers – through collaboration with the “public sector and the institutions they own”. Vorarlberg should be led a little far from the food dependencies. However, pork is far from the only food to be imported into the Ländle.
