A strong “green” signal from the newly elected Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen to the world: his first-ever foreign trip after the election takes him to the UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh on November 7-8 in Egypt! “I want to send out a strong global signal. Because climate change threatens all our livelihoods,” said the red-white-red head of state, who – as reported – will make the fight against global warming the cornerstone of his tenure.
To underline his commitment to “saving the world”, the president also staged a symbolic action in the Maria Theresa hall – because there a huge globe rolls around (in the true sense of the word) at the beginning of the summit on the Red Sea. “As a memorial for visitors”, emphasizes Van der Bellen.
“We don’t have much time left”
His crystal clear message to the thousands of conference participants who, despite the enormous climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions, will fly fearlessly and quite carelessly to Egypt from all corners of the world: “Containing the climate catastrophe is our great joint responsibility and task. We can only overcome them by international cooperation. From Pakistan to Florida to Europe, we have felt the devastating effects of our inaction in recent months.” Floods, storms, droughts and heat waves have already claimed many lives.
“We don’t have much time left,” warns Van der Bellen. But the newly elected politician also has good news: “There are solutions on the table. Now it takes courage and determination to carry them out.”
Concerns about energy and war
What worries the top executive in the state even more: the burning energy crisis in the context of the Russian war of aggression. This causes terrible human suffering, but also undermines years of efforts to protect the climate: “Now more and more environmentally harmful oil and coal are burned in Europe.”
There is no doubt that the energy supply of the population must be guaranteed, therefore it is all the more important and the need of the hour to rapidly expand renewable resources and use energy more efficiently, also to put despots in their place. Progress at the UN Climate Change Conference in Egypt is therefore an absolute must! “His word in the ears of God. For whether the appeal of the Hofburg will be of any use remains to be seen,” was the keynote of an experienced local conference participant.
