They are probably the unlucky ones of the year: Another incident with a swan family at Reintalersee in Kramsach in Tyrol was now fatal. A dog inflicted severe, bloody bite marks on the bird.
Unfortunately, the animal trouble remains faithful to a family of swans already known to “Krone” readers. In September, a fishing hook got caught in the swan father’s head – a sad sight for many hikers, but they couldn’t help it. During a rescue operation by the Tyrolean Animal Welfare Association, the swan was recovered and successfully operated on by the Watten vet Tanja Isser. Days later, a fishing hook had to be removed from a cygnet because it was caught in its beak.
While these two episodes ended lightly, an ultimately fatal incident occurred on Tuesday: A dog owner was out on the popular lake bypass when, he says, the four-legged friend suddenly broke off the leash and ran after another swan family member. The bird suffered severe, bloody bite wounds. “Meat was ripped from the upper arm and the swan probably broke its forearm as a result of the violent defensive movements,” says the vet, who also cared for the victim in this case. With a heavy heart she had to put the beautiful swan to sleep.
The dog owner has been reported to the police
The Kramsach police was also on site: “We reported the dog owner to the BH”, says the inspectorate. The local is very sorry about the incident, he has reported the incident and also wants to cover the vet costs. This doesn’t help the swan anymore. The pull, especially in such a sensitive environment: keep dogs on a lead and always be on the lookout!
