Finnish customs confiscated millions of works of art on their way to Russia. As the authority announced, three shipments of paintings and sculptures were stopped at the Vaalimaa border crossing east of Helsinki this weekend.
The artworks were en route from Italy and Japan via Finland to Russia and are said to have fallen under EU sanctions. Investigations into this have already been started.
Russian Museum Loan
The artworks previously featured in exhibitions and are now being held for their value and safety until the case is resolved. The Finnish radio station Yle reported that it was a museum loan, that is, artefacts from Russian museums that had been loaned to other museums. They have a total value of 42 million euros.
