An apartment in the Ziegelofengasse in Vienna-Margareten burned down completely on Thursday. Two people managed to escape from the fire in time. One of them was briefly locked in the burning apartment.
The smoke spread through open windows and doors over the stairwell of the residential building and the courtyard. The smoke was visible in several districts, Gerald Schimpf, spokesman for Vienna’s professional fire service, reported on Friday.
Smoke cloud largely visible
Because the smoke clouds spread very strongly, they could be seen and smelled from miles away, prompting numerous people to alert the emergency services around 9:40 PM. All three injured were taken to hospital, the last with smoke inhalation.
The fire brigade and rescue workers were busy extinguishing the fire until 11.30 pm. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
