Doctor about the precarious situation – ‘Corona is not only responsible for the situation in clinics’

Date:

Klinik Favoriten, Klinik Floridsdorf, Orthopädisches Spital Speising and now the Klinik Ottakring – risk reports written by employees of these four Viennese hospitals have already reached the public. But how could the situation in hospitals get worse and worse?

Doctor Raffael W., who works in a hospital in Vienna and wishes to remain anonymous, describes the problems to “Krone”.

„krone“: Doctor, how did it come to this?
Raffael W.: It started in 2015 with the centralization and merging of the departments. But that is not possible without the right infrastructure, which is not there. Since then, discontent has grown enormously. Nurses and doctors leave. In the beginning, this meant that the Ottakring Clinic had to source radiologists as freelancers. However, they did not write any findings because they did not have enough time. This was only passed on orally, which was gross negligence. It’s not like that anymore, but it was bad.

Has anything been improved?
It was mismanagement from the start. You have to look at the population dynamics of the city. Outpatient clinics and departments should never have been closed. In addition, fewer people have to work more. It might be fine for a while, but then it explodes, like it is now. And when the city government (note Peter Hacker, SPÖ) says that more patients should visit the established area, that’s a nice idea, but it’s not equipped for it. Many problems are simply homemade and have been around for years. Not only Corona is responsible for the current situation.

How do colleagues deal with it?
The stress is so great that many no longer like to go to work. I know doctors who say they drive to work crying and come home with gastritis.

Who do you see as responsible?
We have often tried to solve the problems. But if nothing happens, you have to go public. The health association is responsible. Instead of spending millions on renaming the hospitals, we need to invest in infrastructure and personnel. Decisions should be made by those who have an idea.

Will it get better in the future?
I see black there if nothing changes. Most young doctors don’t go to the hospital anymore. So there will be a shortage of doctors in hospitals, but also in the private sector. For example with the panel doctors, because nothing happens here either.
