During excavation work in St. Pölten, another piece of Jewish history was discovered.
Silent witnesses of the past recently came to light in St. Pölten. During excavations leading up to the adaptation and renovation of the former synagogue into a modern cultural center, various walls and potsherds, coins from 1860 and a staircase were uncovered. This made it possible to determine the location of the old synagogue next to the current building to the nearest centimeter.

“This building served as a place of worship until the current synagogue was completed in 1913 and then demolished,” explains city archaeologist Ronald Risy. “These studies provide important information for conveying the history of the home and its community, which will take place in the former synagogue beginning in the spring of 2024,” said Martha Keil, director of the Institute of Jewish History.
In 1885 the drying hall of the local arms company Gasser was converted into a Jewish place of worship.
