The number of Covid cases in Europe fell by more than a fifth (21 percent) last week. Regardless, the incidence remained relatively high at 393 cases per 100,000 population. A similar trend was visible among the over-65s.
The EU health authority ECDC (European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, note) released this data in a report on Friday.
Recent wave migrates to Eastern Europe
The latest corona wave with the subvariant B.A5 spread from west to east and is said to have peaked in all countries except Croatia, according to the ECDC. There, Covid cases increased by 46 percent from the week before, especially among 65-year-olds.
The 14-day death rate associated with SARS-CoV-2 has already fallen to 12 deaths per million residents over a three-week period, from 15.6 deaths per million residents the week before. An increasing trend was observed in Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Norway.
Outlook: Hospital admissions should stabilize
According to the ECDC forecast, the number of Covid cases is expected to fall to 168 cases per 100,000 population next week. The number of hospital admissions is expected to stabilize at 5.5 new admissions per 100,000 people and the number of Covid-related deaths is expected to reach a seven-day average of 7.1 deaths per day.
Cases are expected to increase in Finland, Hungary and Sweden over the next week. According to ECDC, hospital admissions will increase in Estonia, Latvia, Malta and Norway. An increasing trend in deaths has been predicted in Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia.
