A poster with which Friuli Venezia Giulia puts itself on the map as an Italian tourist region is causing a stir. Because the poster with the slogan “Friuli Venezia Giulia, all the freedom you want” shows a mountain lake that is not in Friuli but in Carinthia – the Zollnersee. The result: resentment over problems with geography.
The advertising material was shown at a local event in the city of San Daniele del Friuli, among others.
“Since we have no interesting landscapes in Friuli, a photo of the Carinthian Zollnersee was shown on the posters (…) The lake shown in the poster, the Zollnersee, is in Carinthia. I think the staff of the President of Friuli , Massimiliano Fedriga, has problems with geography”, criticized Massimo Moretuzzo, president of the group “Patto per l’Autonomia”.
As reported by the local newspaper Il Gazzettino, PromoTurismo FVG, the regional body responsible for promoting tourism, responded to Moretuzzo’s criticism.
“Cross-border project”
“The Zollnersee is part of the Geopark Carnic Alps. It is a cross-border project in which Italian and Austrian institutions work together and which aims to restore the unity of the Carnic Alps and promote the Friulian and Carinthian alpine meadows.” Against this background, “the decision to take a giant photo of the Zollnersee print aimed primarily at the Austrian public”.
The lake is about 1780 meters above sea level and is about one hectare in size.
