“Which one is yours?” Astrid Proell from St. Florian in Upper Austria often hears this question. The 30-year-old and her husband Manuel are parents to five children under the age of six – and sometimes they can’t quite believe it themselves.
Astrid and Manuel Proell from St. Florian can sing a song about diaper babies, piles of laundry and sticky fingers! They are the proud parents of Emilia, Jonathan, Cosima and twins Valentina and Alexander – five children aged between 4 months and 6 years.
There are always comments – mostly positive
Because “Papa” as a doctor is quite divided, the 30-year-old does most of the housework and care himself. When she’s not out with the little rascals: “We do a lot, otherwise the ceiling will fall down on our heads!”, she laughs. “But we have a good social environment, where someone can always help if there is a fire. “
Comments? “It’s always and everywhere! Usually positive, but certainly also negative. You don’t have to have five children to let people intervene unsolicited. But we haven’t listened to that for a long time.”
No break for mom: “They’ll find me. Gone!”
And what is life like with five small children? Colorful, loud, funny, lots of work – and quite challenging at times! When you think of the 15 to 20 diapers that three babies need every day. Or the need for a new family car that, in addition to three child seats and two baby car seats, must also have room for a duo stroller and a buggy.
Buy seven? A challenge. Vacation? Almost impossible! to breastfeed? With the twins, that is no longer possible because there is simply too little time and hands. “When three people cry and two argue, I sometimes reach my limits. But going outside and taking a deep breath doesn’t work. They find me. Everywhere!” laughs Astrid, who loses neither her sense of humor nor her nerves.
Rest and planning are the recipe
Apart from the meals and the bedtime story, every day is different at Proells, but it always goes well! When there are visitors, 17 (!) children can whiz through the house. Rest and planning are the recipe for the mother of five: “I like to have the children around me, but I also really enjoy the evenings with Manuel. When Dad comes home with sushi, the kids will know what’s going on!”
