A small child was killed by a huge hailstone during a storm in northeastern Spain. “He hit his head straight in the head,” Carme Vall’s councilor for the Catalan city of La Bisbal de l’Empordà, Carme Vall, said on Wednesday. The 20-month-old girl was taken to hospital but succumbed to her injuries overnight, according to the hospital.
According to the alderman, the hailstorm lasted only ten minutes on Tuesday, but these were “terrible”. The hailstones were therefore up to eleven centimeters in size. The Catalan Meteorological Bureau spoke of the largest hailstones in 20 years that have fallen in the area near the French border.
Spanish television showed cars with broken windscreens or dented roofs. According to photos released by City Hall, the church’s stained glass windows were also shattered.
