Danger of falling rocks! – “Our mountains are starting to crumble more and more”

Date:

Climate change and melting glaciers make our mountains more vulnerable and dangerous. Mountain guide Christoph Wastl had to experience this firsthand.

Two weeks ago, on his way to the Großglockner peak, the mountain guide was hit in the face by a boulder the size of a football, which had probably been kicked off by another skipping rope – the “Krone” reported. Diagnosis: skull fracture, broken nose, multiple broken ribs, ruptured ligaments and bruises.

“Mountains are a huge mess in the summer
The mountain professional from Villach, who works full-time in the army mountain guide training team at Jägerbataillon 26 in Spittal, never thought it could happen like this: “The high mountains change brutally and mountains, such as the Großglockner , are huge in the summer Pile of rubble that is becoming more and more Especially when there are more people on the road, more happens because loose stones can also be loosened by climbers.”

After five days in the Schwarzach hospital in Salzburg, Christoph Wastl is recovering at home: “The injuries are healing well and I am sure that I will be back in top shape by the winter.”

For Wastl it is now clear: “We mountaineers must be aware that the risk and the objective dangers are constantly increasing. We should really consider skipping certain tours in the middle of summer and prefer to do them in the spring or late autumn. do when the ground is frozen and the rock is solid.”
