Meteorologists in California announced extreme heat on Wednesday, expected to last into the western United States through next week. The governor of the west coast state, Gavin Newsom, has declared a state of emergency as a precaution to provide emergency aid and resources.
This is an urgent reminder of how “real” the climate crisis is, Newsom said. He warned of bottlenecks in the energy supply and called on residents of the most populous US state to save electricity, for example not to set their air conditioning to the lowest temperature.
Temperatures already above 40 degrees
The National Weather Service expects temperatures near record levels in many places. In Death Valley, California, known for its extreme heat, temperatures of around 51 degrees Celsius are forecast for the weekend. Temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius were measured in parts of Southern California on Wednesday.
