A local mountaineer died on his way to Achenkopf (Pinzgau) on Tuesday. He could not be found until today, Thursday, after a long search.
The Fusch mountain rescue service was warned on Tuesday evening, August 30, that a 63-year-old Pinzgauer had been reported missing by his relatives. The Pinzgauer had set out on a mountain tour to the Heubergalm (Bruck). The search area stretched from the “Heubergalm” in the direction of “Drei Brüder” and “Achenkopf”.
“We first checked all the entries in the mountain book without finding anything,” said Fusch’s Paul Hasenauer, head of operations and local office. “It was only when we evaluated the GPS data from the missing person’s mobile phone via ‘findmyphone’ that we were able to trace the exact course of his journey.” Search groups reported the finding of Alpine poles in the area of the Achenkopf ridge (2260 m, Glockner group).
The missing person was eventually found by a rescuer on the northwest side of the ridge during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. He may have fallen and died instantly. After weather conditions did not allow a rescue on Wednesday, the Pinzgauer was rescued on Thursday morning with the support of a police helicopter team.
Four alpine police officers, 14 mountain rescuers from Fusch and Zell am See, three dog handlers and 22 members of the volunteer fire brigade were present.
