Different Theories – Suicide? Accident? Death of oil manager is a mystery

Date:

After the mysterious series of deaths of Russian oligarchs, there has been much speculation about the cause of the latest victim. Lukoil top manager Rawil Maganow fell from a hospital window on the sixth floor on Thursday. Was it an accident when he smoked a cigarette? Or suicide because the businessman suffered from depression? However, not everyone wants to believe that these two theories spread by the Russian media …

In November 2019, Maganov received the Alexander Nevsky Order from Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the Kremlin chief may not have been happy with the manager’s attitude toward the invasion war a few years later. In early March, Lukoil’s board of directors publicly called for an end to the “armed conflict” and expressed its deepest condolences to those affected by this “tragedy”.

Russian state media reports on Maganov .’s depression
Maganov’s open criticism of Moscow’s “military operation” has left doubts as to whether his death was a suicide or an accident. Russian state media reported that the oligarch was hospitalized because he suffered from heart problems and depression. This raises the suspicion that it is a suicide.

Cigarettes on the balcony: fallen while smoking?
The Russian news site “Baza”, on the other hand, comes with an accident theory: it writes that a pack of cigarettes was found on the spot where the manager was killed. These would have been on a balcony window sill that was actually locked. “He fell from the side of the facade of the main building of the Central Hospital, which is being repaired. There are no surveillance cameras there now. However, there are balconies on this side that are not intended for patients,” the report said.

The group itself has remained extremely vague about the reason for Maganov’s downfall. The chairman of the board “deceased after a serious illness”, was informed after the death.

Deputy head of Gazprombank does not believe in suicides by oligarchs
In social media, both suicide and accident theories are strongly questioned. Several other oligarchs had died under mysterious circumstances since the beginning of the war. Most of these incidents were also believed to have committed suicide. But also that old deputy head of Gazprombank, Igor Wolobujev, in an interview that appeared on YouTube at the end of April, expressed his doubts about this wave of suicides. After the war started, Volobuyev fled to Ukraine and said he wanted to fight against Russian forces there.

Maganov was a prominent member of the Russian business elite. He was a close associate of Wagit Alekperow, one of the founders of Lukoil, and had worked for the group for nearly 30 years. Alekperov resigned as CEO of Lukoil after the UK put the entrepreneur on a sanctions list and frozen his assets.
