Elections on September 25 – Italy poll: far-right party in prospect

Date:

According to a study published Thursday, the far-right Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy/FdI) party could become the country’s strongest single party in snap elections on September 25. The party around the right-wing populist Giorgia Meloni would thus reach 24 percent. The Social Democrats follow closely with 23 percent.

According to research by the opinion research institute Ipsos, a direct race between the Fdl and the Democratic Party (Partito Democratico/PD) is to be expected.

Center-right alliance can win majority
The right-wing Lega of ex-Interior Minister Matteo Salvini would get 13.4 percent, while Forza Italia of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would get eight percent. The centre-right alliance of Fratelli d’Italia, Lega and Forza Italia could thus win a relative majority in the newly elected parliament.

Five Star Movement Descending
The Five Star Movement, led by ex-Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who emerged as the strongest single party in the 2018 parliamentary elections and split from Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in June, has shrunk to 13.4 percent. The alliance of the small center-left party Italia Viva led by ex-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and the center party Azione could get five percent of the vote.

Draghi’s ruling coalition collapsed in July. Early parliamentary elections will be held on 25 September. So far, Italy has never elected its parliament in the fall.
