Corruption scandal surrounding popular politician
Chaotic scenes have unfolded in recent days in front of Kirchner’s apartment in the elegant Recoleta neighborhood of the capital Buenos Aires. Numerous supporters of the vice president are currently camping to support the popular politician. In a recent corruption trial against Kirchner, prosecutors had demanded 12 years in prison and a life ban from public office. She is said to have been the leader of a criminal organization and brought in about a billion dollars for the state.
Freund ordered orders without a tender?
Together with her late husband and ex-president Néstor Kirchner, she arranged a whole series of government contracts for a friend of hers, without tendering. Some of the excessive construction costs later flowed back to the Kirchners. The vice president rejects the allegations and accuses the judiciary of investigating her for political reasons.
Kirchner represents the left wing of the governing coalition and has numerous supporters. Violent clashes broke out in front of her apartment between protesters and the police. After neighbors complained about the ongoing demonstrations, security forces set up roadblocks that brought down Kirchner’s accomplices.
