The general coordinator of LAB admits that they follow with “concern” the statements of the Lehendakari about the need for an income pact, as he says the executive is “not neutral and has carried out interventions that weaken the working class”

The general coordinator of LAB, Igor Arroyohas the economic policy of the Basque governmenton whom he thinks he is acting “with neglect” since, according to him, he was able to agree a minimum wage of 1,400 euros through interprofessional agreements in the Basque Country (which lay down specific working conditions applicable to all sectors) “and he does not”.

In an interview assigned to Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, Arroyo admitted that with “concern” they had followed Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu’s approach to reactivate the income pact, stating that they were unaware of those intentions. Moreover, he has claimed that the executive branch “has no neutral position. We have seen it in the Mercedes conflict, but also in the Bizkaia metal conflict or in the homes in Gipuzkoa. It does not occupy a position favorable to the working class, on the contrary. In addition, he often relinquishes things in his hands and acts carelessly.”

Arroyo has also criticized the employer’s position in the debate over whether wages should be adjusted to the CPI. “The multinationals want to take advantage of the situation to further boost their profits. We are not talking about small companies, which are struggling. In those cases, we usually talk to our economists and are flexible. But those are the exceptions,” he clarified.

That is why he stressed that LAB will not support any pact that implies a decrease in the purchasing power of the working class. According to him, “the agreements have a fixed term, which can be two or three years. For us it is essential that at the end of that term the increase in the CPI is guaranteed”.

Arroyo believes that in the workplace there is “will and determination” to claim what corresponds to the working class and points out in this sense that “a new cycle of struggle is underway”, which could even lead to a general strike. activate. However, he has admitted that there is currently no “global alliance” between LAB and ELA; “This is not possible at the moment for various reasons,” he clarifies. Arroyo notes two essential differences between the two nationalist unions. Among other things, “the conception of confrontation as a union that ELA has, while LAB prioritizes a class vision”, and that “we believe there is a need to ask a general question, the rules of the game need to be changed and we have sovereignty for this; ELA doesn’t see it that way, at least in fact”.
