On Thursday at 3.20 am, the emergency call went to the police in Klosterneuburg. A frightened retiree sitting in a wheelchair was on the phone saying, “I’m on fire.”
The two officers, Daniel Huber and Franz Gruber, did not hesitate for a moment, started the rescue chain and drove to the 76-year-old. Still in telephone contact with the man, the officers first kicked in the patio door.
“Seen less than 30 centimeters”
“We couldn’t see a foot due to the heavy smoke,” Huber told the Krone. They found the man in bed upstairs and carried him outside, where the paramedics who arrived gave him first aid and then flew him to the hospital by helicopter.
The cause of the fire – including the wheelchair was on fire – is still being investigated.
