Schmyhal promises: – Ukraine can supply nuclear energy to Germany

Date:

Ukraine wants to support Germany with the supply of nuclear energy on the way out of dependence on Russian energy supplies. “Currently, Ukraine exports its electricity to Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and Poland. But we are all set to expand our exports to Germany,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal told the German news agency. Schmyhal meets Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in Berlin on Saturday.

“Thanks to our nuclear power plants, we have enough electricity in Ukraine. I will discuss this during my visit to Berlin and afterwards also to Brussels”, explains Schmyhal.

“That would be good for both parties”
Parallel to the Russian invasion at the end of February, Ukraine, along with neighboring Moldova, has been disconnected from the former Soviet electricity grid. The synchronization with the European network took place in mid-March.

Since then, the country has been exporting between 400 and 700 megawatts of electricity daily to the European Union and Moldova. Schmyhal now wants to increase the export quota for the EU many times over. “That would be very good for both sides. The EU would get more energy and we would get the foreign exchange we urgently need,” said the prime minister.

Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant Partly Under Russian Control
In Ukraine, nuclear power plants of Soviet design with a total capacity of more than 14 gigawatts are operated. However, as of March, six units at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Enerhodar have been under Russian control. The international community is concerned that hostilities near Europe’s largest nuclear power plant could lead to a nuclear accident.

With the Russian invasion, the power consumption in Ukraine has also fallen enormously due to the fighting, the flight movements and the economic malaise. This freed up capacity for export.
