More and more parents with children are feeling the psychological and financial pressures of the current global crises. There is often not enough money for tutoring. That’s what the ‘Caritas’ learning cafes are for. Due to the larger number of students, a search was made for larger premises and opening hours were extended.
Not all children can go to school without help. And many parents can hardly support their children in this. Low education, no money for tutoring and tight living conditions are just some of the reasons that make it impossible for students to achieve the learning success they want.
successful concept
That’s why “Caritas” founded “learning cafes” more than ten years ago. There are three in Burgenland: at the locations in Eisenstadt, Neusiedl and Oberwart. Children and young people between the ages of six and 14 receive free tutoring and responsible afternoon care.
“As the psychological and economic pressure in many families has increased noticeably since the start of the Corona crisis and private lessons are no longer affordable for many, the demand in our learning cafes has increased enormously,” says Caritas director Melanie Balaskovics.
On the waiting list
Nationally, 92 students visited the learning cafes in the past school year. In Eisenstadt alone, 42 children will start next week. There are also more than 20 on the waiting list. Due to the increased number of students, the learning cafes are now open from Monday to Thursday from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Volunteers are also very welcome: “If you are of age and want to help the students learn, the most important requirements have been met!” There is no shortage of fun: reading, crafts and games are also on the program.
