Iran has offered itself to Europe as an energy supplier. However, for this to happen, the Vienna nuclear deal must first be restored and all US economic sanctions against Iran lifted, the State Department spokesman said Monday.
“As we know, we have the necessary gas reserves and the potential and can therefore also meet Europe’s needs in this area,” Nasser Kanaani said earlier. Iran has the world’s second largest gas reserves, but has little room for export due to domestic demand.
Past technical issues
In addition, there have been technical problems with gas production due to US sanctions in recent years, Kanaani admitted. However, these have now been remedied and Iran no longer has any restrictions.
In order for the country to actually supply gas, the Vienna nuclear deal must be reinstated and all US economic sanctions lifted. Iran and its six contracting parties China, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and the US are currently working on reviving the 2015 agreement. So far no agreement has been reached, although the Iranian spokesperson was convinced that this could be achieved quickly.
Economic cooperation with Russia
In addition to the technical difficulties, Iran’s close economic cooperation with Russia could prevent Europe from supplying gas. This is a thorn in the side of the United States. The US military also believes that Iran is supporting the Russian military with weapons. They would have supplied (many defective) combat drones for the war in Ukraine.
