The European Commission proposed five this Wednesday initiatives to answer “astronomical” energy pricesincluding the introduction of a cap on Russian gas purchases, reduce the income of energy companies and put a mandatory saving of electricity.

The head of the Community Executive, Ursula von der Leyen, also explained in a press conference that one of the other measures involves helping energy companies that are currently experiencing liquidity problems due to gas price volatility.

“We are facing an extraordinary situation, because Russia is not a reliable supplier and is manipulating the energy markets,” argued von der Leyen, two days before European Union energy ministers meet in Brussels to agree on the next steps.

In his action, von der Leyen urged that Vladimir Putin’s regime uses energy to “blackmail” European citizens, defending the “unity” and “solidarity” with which the states of the European Union have dealt with the situation since the beginning. of the invasion of Ukraine six months ago.

Another key to the Brussels proposal is to control the peaks that determine the price of electricity, for which von der Leyen has called for a mandatory target to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours: “We need an intelligent reduction in demand”, he said, after alluding to the “world’s shortage of energy”.
