UN raises accusations – Russian army would detain pregnant women

Date:

The United Nations on Friday made serious allegations against both the Russian and Ukrainian military. The Russian army would detain at least four pregnant women as prisoners of war and the Ukrainian armed forces would arbitrarily detain people.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, there has been a dramatic increase in human rights violations, UN mission chief Matilda Bogner said Friday. She and her team are tasked with monitoring the human rights situation in the war-torn country. Arbitrary arrests or disappearances are examples of human rights violations. At least 416 people were killed by Russian troops. These were areas controlled by Moscow. According to the UN, 16 of these people were found dead and 166 of them were released.

Among the Russian prisoners of war are said to be at least four pregnant women. Bogner called for immediate control of their release for humanitarian reasons. A total of 51 cases of arbitrary arrests and 30 disappearances would point to Ukrainian troops. However, the UN has not provided any further information on this.

Infectious diseases are spreading
The Ukrainian side granted the UN “unfettered access” to their detention facilities. Russia did not. Bogner is particularly concerned about the situation in the Olenivka prison, which is located in a Russian-controlled area in eastern Ukraine. There, prisoners of war are said to suffer from infectious diseases such as hepatitis A and tuberculosis.

However, the United Nations also noted that the Ukrainian side had mistreated some of their POWs. This happened, for example, when she was arrested, during the first interrogations and when she was taken to a prison camp.
