Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Faruk Kaymakci spoke to the “Krone” about Turkey’s confidence to join the EU soon, the relaxed relationship with Austria and the hope in the Istanbul talks to end the war in Ukraine. However, the EU continues to accuse Turkey of autocratic tendencies and there is also a risk of another escalation in the dispute with Greece.
„krone“: Last June there was a meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Chancellor Karl Nehammer. This was preceded by a certain ice age between Austria and Turkey. Then both talked about relaxation. Is it still like this?
Faruk Kaymakci: We currently have very good and honest relations with Austria. We understand the concerns and strategic goals of both parties. Our strategic goal is EU membership and we firmly believe that this is in the interest of Turkey, but also that of Europe.
