Lady Camones, another victim of the discrediting of democracy in Peru

Date:

She only lasted 38 days as congressional president of a paralyzed country, mired in an unprecedented political crisis. Laws are no longer debated, but motions of censure against presidents and ministers

Nine months after the inauguration of his first left-wing government in the past thirty years, Gabriel Boric, President of Chile, is experiencing his first crisis and is forced to replace five ministers after losing a plebiscite to draft a new constitution to improve of the set at the time of the dictator Augusto Pinochet. Colombia is living the experience of electing a leftist man, a former guerrilla, for his government in more than 200 years of democracy. Brazil will face elections next month that will be stirred by a fight between current president, Jair Bolsonaro, and a former president, Lula da Silva. Right against left. Conservatives vs Progressives. The “I’m still the same” before the “I want change”.

What’s happening in Peru is a bit more of the same, but with a bit more spice. It’s a ceviche with all the cilantro you want. There is no name that fits what is happening in the country that holds the record for impeached presidents. This is a country where laws or projects that allow for the advancement of citizenship are not discussed in Congress. No. The favorite sport is the vote of censure against ministers, tax complaints, how we imprison the president, bring forward elections or cause a coup. Private interests ahead of those of a people not escaping the global crisis. Peru is an epidemic, the country is surviving with a virus that doesn’t kill, but is just as bad as Covid.

The latest victim of Peru’s disastrous politics is Congress President Lady Mercedes Camones Soriano. Unlike President Pedro Castillo’s party, he was in office for only 38 days. She was leading a session in parliament when she was surprised by the presentation of a motion of censure against her. A ruse based on some audios in which the leader of her party, APP (Popular Alliance for Progress), César Acuña invited her -it also seemed an order- to commit the crime of influence, at the same time as the operation Implicit was one of its objectives the fall of the current president. The strategy turned out to be an own goal. The APP lost the Congressional presidency and won an influence investigation in return.

Lady Camones had broken into politics four years ago at the hands of Keiko Fujimori, the dictator’s daughter, by unsuccessfully leading the Popular Force (FP) lists in her region. Her 15 years as a civil servant at the head of the National Identification and Registry Office did her little good at the time: she received only 3% of the popular support for her candidacy. But just over a year ago, she finally managed to become the first vice president of Congress.

During her speeches during the 12 months she held that position, the APP delegate made it very clear that she believed that the deadlock in Peru should be resolved with Castillo’s resignation due to his “lack of preparation”, “little knowledge”, ” incapacity” and the constant corruption scandals that mock him. But his staunch opposition to the Peruvian president has only lasted 38 days since he became president of Congress.

Every day in Peru there is a case where a deputy is accused. Even the highest authority cannot escape it. On August 9, the president of the republic himself had his most dramatic moment when a special team of prosecutors and police infiltrated the president’s home looking for evidence against his sister-in-law, who was being prosecuted by the courts. And that’s where what some media outlets have called “the revenge” began. The Revenge of Pedro Castillo.

The president is aware that the opposition does not want him to rule for another day. His opponents have already asked for a “vacancy” twice and were preparing a third because they also have cases where the executive can be charged with corruption and influence. But the worst part is that the government and political parties have been given more mistrust than credit. It is not in vain. The Ministries of Culture, Health and the Interior are already subject to a censure vote and the Ministry of Transport, Agricultural Development and Irrigation is in perspective.

Castillo understands that he is the target of an attack that aims to end his presidency sooner than expected. And now that’s called revenge. The president embraces comments stating that the majority of Peruvians support his management, but it does not stop the country from thinking that there is a crisis of responsibility, that the executive receives many complaints about corruption, that it changes cabinets so often. only leads to more mistrust.

For several political analysts, asked in this way, it is clear that “there is a weakness of the political parties, which says very little about Peruvian democracy,” they point out. Other media believe that the country needs more reflection to prevent further weakening of democracy and less confidence in elected parliamentarians.

The removal of Lady Camones does not end the murderous wars that take place every day. Peru is illegible. He has Alberto Fujimori in prison with a 25-year sentence. And three other former presidents have outstanding bills that need processing. Another president, Alan García, in whom the whole world believed, would rather shoot himself in the head than live in prison. And with a touching epitaph: «I leave my corpse as a sign of contempt for my adversaries».
