Russian MPs: – Putin should be charged with treason

Date:

President Vladimir Putin has come under increasing criticism from within his own ranks for the Ukrainian army’s rapid capture of territory in the east of the country. After the unusually sharp remarks by Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov and attacks from the nationalist camp, MPs from St. Petersburg now want to accuse the Kremlin chief of high treason.

Regional politicians from the Smolenskoye district now want to convince the State Duma (lower house of the Russian parliament) to take appropriate steps to impeach the president. The goal is clear: an impeachment procedure. Local politician Dmitry Paljuga wrote in a tweet that the majority of his colleagues supported this decision.

Project has little chance of success
The president’s decision to attack Ukraine “endangers the security of Russia and its citizens,” a statement to the State Duma said. In addition, the sanctions imposed on Russia over the invasion of Ukraine are jeopardizing the country’s economic prosperity, it has been stressed.

Although the initiative would have very little chance of success, the politicians are also concerned about the symbolism. The goal is to show the people who oppose Putin that they are not alone.

Within a few days, Kiev troops recaptured huge swaths of territory. The Ukrainian General Staff spoke of more than 3,000 square kilometers on Sunday. In the Kharkiv region, the army is advancing not only to the south and east, but also to the north, towards the state border. Over the course of Sunday, Russian troops withdrew from other border towns.

Series of Russian leadership failures
Another episode symbolizes the series of accidents of the Russian leaders. Unimpressed by the fighting, became president Putin jokingly shown on state television at the inauguration of several Moscow city anniversary facilities. Among other things, he himself set a Ferris wheel in motion – the highest in all of Europe, it was said. A day later, the system had to be taken out of service due to technical damage. Things are not going well for the Kremlin boss at the moment.
