AK advocates abolition – Fixed-term leases cost 31 million euros

Date:

When a lease expires, the rent can be adjusted. This is particularly bitter in times of rising cost of living in Austria.

Almost every second lease in Austria is restricted. In times of rising prices, this becomes a problem for many. AK house law expert Lukas Tockner: “Every extension or change of tenant can be used to increase the rent after the end of a contract. In our consultation, tenants complained that their rent was increased by 50 or even 100 euros per month after contract extension.”

31 million euros per year
With an average term of four years, every fourth contract per year is either due for renewal or a new lease. In total, according to the Chamber of Commerce, this costs more than 31 million euros per year. In times that are already tough anyway, temporary leases make long-term life planning more difficult. The Chamber of Commerce therefore advocates terminating temporary contracts for real estate groups and large landlords. However, private individuals should be exempted from this.
