A trail of slime from a giant snail led customs at Düsseldorf Airport to another 92 of their own kind. The 8-inch-tall mollusk had escaped from a Nigerian piece of luggage. Customs officials initially thought the huge snail was a toy – until it moved.
“Their trail led to a hole in a piece of luggage from Nigeria, where the head of a second giant snail was already protruding,” a customs spokesman in Düsseldorf said on Friday.
The live giant snails are not species protected and were probably brought to Germany as a delicacy.
The luggage had not been collected. It was addressed to an Afro shop in the Ruhr area.
However, during the transport, veterinary regulations and animal welfare were violated.
