A company in the St. Veit neighborhood fell victim to hackers: the cybercriminals had gained access to a mail server and had read and manipulated correspondence with a second company. They stole several tens of thousands of euros.
The hackers acted cleverly: they intercepted and read all digital correspondence between the company and a business partner from Shanghai. The letter was about an order for which several tens of thousands of euros had already been paid to China in advance. It was also agreed to transfer the remaining amount to the company in Shanghai after receipt of the freight documents (bill of lading).
email forged
The perpetrators waited for the company to receive the consignment note and the invoice to be mailed to the company. However, this was intercepted, forged and forwarded by the internet scammers. It stated that the amount should not be transferred to a bank in China, but to a European bank account.
The company then transferred the remaining amount of tens of thousands of euros to the account the scammers had provided. The fraud was only noticed after telephone inquiries with the Chinese company. Follow-up investigations are being conducted.
