Fake accounts on the internet are attacking competitors of ex-President Donald Trump and praising him to the skies. It smells like Moscow’s guilt – but it isn’t, as Krone correspondent Christian Thiele explains.
To this day, many of his political opponents still believe that he would never have become president in 2016 without the help of Vladimir Putin. Because the Kremlin had created an army of fake accounts (bots) that spread false information – especially about Hillary Clinton – on social media. Now Putin’s bot army strategy is making a comeback – except it’s not controlled by Moscow. Hundreds of thousands of fake Twitter accounts have been created in the United States in recent months praising Donald Trump and attacking his rivals, according to a new study.
