“As we approach the US Summit, our goal is to develop a new regional approach to improve how we manage migration together in the region over the next decade,” Biden said.
The president said the migration crisis requires a “coordinated regional effort” to tackle migration, eliminate its causes, and combat human trafficking networks.
Under the slogan “Building a Sustainable, Sustainable and Fair Future”, the summit also addresses post-pandemic health security, the climate crisis, the transition to clean energy, access to digital technologies, equitable economic growth and the role of civil society. So far, eight regular summits have been held: Miami (1994), Santiago de Chile (1998), Quebec (Canada, 2001), Mar del Plata (Argentina, 2005), Port Span (Trinidad and Tobago, 2009), Cartagena. De Indias (Colombia, 2012), Panama City (2015) and Lima (2018).
However, it was only in 2015 that the summit in Panama was attended by all the leaders of the 35 member states of the Organization of American States (OAS), which was joined by Cuba.
