Ukraine’s territorial gains in recent days have been a huge success for the defenders, but that also comes with risks. General Staff strategist and Colonel Berthold Sandtner in the big “Club 3” interview (see video above).
Ukraine’s highly successful surprise offensive in the Kharkiv region began ten days ago. In the “Club 3” talk of “Krone”, “Kurier” and “profil”, Colonel Berthold Sandtner, military strategist for the Federal Army, warns of the dangers of such huge territorial gains. “Without being preachy, the question arises: does the Ukrainian side recognize in time when it is enough? Holding such a large space is difficult and you should try not to do the same as the Russians. For now, however, it does not look like Ukraine an offensive approach will continue.”
In winter, it will be decisive whether Russia can muster enough assault troops for a counterattack – which it doesn’t look like at the moment. In addition, the already difficult supply situation for the invaders has further deteriorated as a result of the Ukrainian counter-attack. “If you assume that a soldier needs 15 liters of water per day, you can roughly calculate what that means logistically. Especially given the fact that winter is coming.”
Winter as a big challenge
Because in particularly severe winters, vehicles break down, supplies falter and soldiers freeze to death. “There is no longer an apple on the tree. That will be a very big challenge for both parties,” says Sandtner. “And the supply situation for the population will not be better than that of the soldiers.”
