The Big Interview – How Critical Can You Be, Mr. Mangott?

Date:

He is the Peter Filzmaier of the Ukraine conflict: Prof. Gerhard Mangott of the University of Innsbruck. The Russia expert talks with Conny Bischofberger about Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Selenskyj, the religious war over arms supplies, the failure of the EU and his bird’s eye view.

His office at the “Sowi”, the Institute of Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Innsbruck, is small and light. Prof. dr. Gerhard Mangott enjoys getting away from the spotlight of the TV cameras for once. The political scientist has already given 600 interviews this year, on some days even six. No scientist in Tyrol has coined the name “University of Innsbruck” so often.

“I’m still nervous in the TV studio,” admits the 56-year-old, sitting back and relaxing. On the table in front of him is “Putin’s World” by Angela Stent, behind him on the shelves is a whole collection of non-fiction and literature about the Soviet Union. On ORF and also on German television, the Russia expert comments on the war in Ukraine with an almost gritty face, impeccable and always perfectly dressed. In the “Krone” interview, Mangott also talks about his life with a smile.
