Concerned animal rights activists sounded the alarm on a farm in Klagenfurt-Land in the spring: dozens of pigs had to be rescued from a filthy stable, badly injured and tormented. Your owner must now bear the consequences – the farmer, once the proud AMA hallmark, has been charged with animal cruelty.
Bloody tails, paralyzed legs, pneumonia, almost blind from eye irritation, abscesses on the tormented body – pigs were found in this pitiful condition in a large fattening farm in Klagenfurt-Land. Animal rights activists from the Association against Animal Factories (VGT) had sounded the alarm in April and called for a protest action, which then also forced the official veterinarian and the district administration into action. The poor pigs lived dirty and crammed together on the controversial fully slatted floors; her short life on the fattening farm was marked only by pain and suffering.
Public Prosecution Service: The minimum standards were not even met
The Klagenfurt prosecutor’s office was also alarmed by the terrifying reports – and has now filed a complaint against the pig farmer. He is charged with animal cruelty.
He allegedly caused at least 40 pigs “unnecessary torment by keeping them in conditions that violate animal welfare,” it said. On the farm, which had been awarded the AMA quality mark as a model company years ago, even minimum standards were not observed.
During the process, he will have to explain how the experienced farmer abandoned his animals. Judge Dietmar Wasserteurer then decides which sentence seems appropriate. Up to two years in prison is theoretically possible; when overwhelmed by personal fortunes and taking responsibility, there can of course also be a distraction.
