Russia says it is ready for a prisoner exchange with the United States. “We have indicated several times that we are ready to negotiate,” a foreign ministry spokeswoman said Monday. However, the US embassy in Moscow is not fulfilling its official duties to continue the dialogue.
A possible prisoner swap between Russia and the US gained momentum after a Russian court sentenced American basketball player Brittney Griner to nine years in prison for drug smuggling in early August. Russia and the US have repeatedly indicated that Griner and ex-soldier Paul Whelan could be exchanged for US-captured arms dealer Viktor Bout.
US President Joe Biden met with the families of Whelan and Griner at the White House on Friday. The government will use all means available to get Griner and Whelan home safely, spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.
