Power outage, damage – dead and injured in major earthquake in Mexico

Date:

For the third time on September 19, Mexico was hit by massive earthquakes on Monday. Compared to the earthquakes in 1985 and 2017, the country came down slightly this time. A woman was killed by falling debris in the port city of Manzanillo, Colima State, and a man was buried by debris and died. Hours of rescue attempts were unsuccessful. Homes were damaged and power went out in about 1.4 million homes.

In Colima, three people were injured in a gas explosion and another person was injured by broken glass at a hospital in Michoacán. More than 48 million people in the country, which has a population of 126 million, felt the earthquake, according to civil defense. Many gathered in the open air. The US agency USGS gave the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.6, the Mexican Seismological Institute at 7.7. In the hours following Monday’s quake, there were more than 200 aftershocks, the largest measuring 5.3. Sometimes a tsunami warning was in effect.

Hospital heavily damaged
Mexican media reported damage in the states of Colima and Michoacan. A hospital in Michoacan’s Maruata community was badly damaged and patients were evacuated. In several states, school classes were initially suspended in the afternoon. Engineers and technical teams in the most affected areas are investigating the detailed condition of buildings and infrastructure, the Mexican government said.

The damage was limited in the capital Mexico City. Shortly after a disaster relief exercise took place across the country on Monday afternoon, the earthquake alarm went off. Not coincidentally on September 19, a sad date in Mexico. On this day, 37 years ago, an earthquake struck Mexico City, killing thousands. On September 19, 2017, the ground shook again in Mexico – 369 people died, 228 of them in Mexico City.

Accumulation of earthquakes should be investigated
The entire west coast of South, Central and North America lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the most geologically active region in the world. 90 percent of all earthquakes worldwide take place there. “The coincidence of the September 19 earthquakes deserves to open new lines of scientific research,” tweeted the National Autonomous University of Mexico. This must be done with seriousness and method.
