Greenpeace on the other hand – research on eco-nuclear energy is advancing

Date:

Graz researchers now want to initiate the end of conventional nuclear power plants with a new, uranium-free molten salt reactor. Greenpeace rejects this technology.

“We have developed a nuclear energy source that does not require the addition of uranium,” assures Emerald Horizon’s Mario Müller. The Styrian expert gained experience as a particle physicist at CERN, the European organization for nuclear research.

Like CEO Florin Wagner, Müller is convinced that the end of conventional nuclear power plants has heralded. The element used is thorium (Th) – bound in liquid salt – which occurs three times more often in nature and is only weakly radioactive.

Prototype made in Slovenia
In addition to the liquid thorium salt ring, the reactor consists of an injector that is used in medical technology. In addition, there is a container-sized shell with heat exchangers. Pluggable modules provide electricity and direct hydrogen production.

In any case, the first component tests have been so successful that construction of a prototype can start in Slovenia in the autumn. Mario Müller is convinced that the technological gap to CO₂-free energy self-sufficiency in Europe can be closed. In October, the researchers will also present their new technology in the Austrian parliament.

Greenpeace boss Alexander Egit strongly rejects the new thorium reactors because “radioactive material is still used and radioactive waste is produced”.
