After severe flooding in parts of the Caribbean, Storm Fiona, a magnitude three hurricane, also brought heavy rainfall to the Turks and Caicos Islands. The government of the British Overseas Territory has called on the approximately 30,000 residents to stay at home on Tuesday. The hurricane had gained strength and passed through the island chain with sustained winds of up to 185 kilometers per hour.
The US Hurricane Center predicted that “Fiona” will continue to strengthen Thursday and approach Bermuda. As a category one (out of five) hurricane, “Fiona” made landfall in Puerto Rico on Sunday and caused severe damage — Governor Pedro Pierluisi even called the extent of the destruction “catastrophic.” He said at least two people were killed. More than 1.1 million of Puerto Rico’s roughly 1.5 million outlets were still without power on Tuesday after a power outage across the island.
Tuesday marked the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria’s devastating impact on US soil. Nearly 3000 people were killed, the reconstruction is far from complete and is now becoming more difficult. The U.S. civil defense agency FEMA announced on Tuesday that it would send hundreds of additional workers to Puerto Rico in the coming days.
