Mermaids – i.e. hybrids of fish and women – have been known to a wide audience since “Ariel”. But what is the fascination with mythical creatures actually based on? Krone+ delves into the Austrian mermaid scene with you – and spoke to a real mermaid!
It started with an article about animal rights organization PETA’s idea to replace fish in aquariums with human artists. The show “Mermaid Love Story” by the British underwater ensemble Aquabatix in the Istanbul Water Zoo served as a model. So mermaids instead of surgeonfish: is that realistic and practical? With this question I approached Harald Slaubek of the “Austrian Mermaids”.
Together with his wife Nicole, he is the point of contact for all mermaids and men in Austria, organizes courses and knows the “scene” like the back of his hand. And he got involved in the strange thought experiment!
