Almost every day new horror stories about gun violence come out of the US. That is why a report from Missouri is all the more baffling. Although you can’t buy alcohol until you’re 21 in the conservative state, even seventh graders are allowed to walk down the street with real guns.
Six years ago, Republicans passed a law that allowed the open carrying of guns and pistols — and with no age restrictions. Since then, 14-year-olds have been allowed to wield semi-automatic rifles in public.
New bill
That is why democratic politicians have now submitted a new bill. It states that minors may only carry weapons in the presence of adult supervisors. But the motion has now been rejected: by 105 votes to 39.
Tony Lovasco, a Republican congressman, explains, “The Democrats are again trying to curtail our right to gun ownership. Who can predict if a 14-year-old will attack someone with their gun. We don’t punish our citizens for crimes they didn’t commit .”
