High energy prices – UK government lifts moratorium on fracking

Date:

In view of the enormous price increase, a discussion has erupted in Europe about tapping gas reservoirs in shale rock. The UK government has now lifted a moratorium on controversial fracking that has been in place since 2019.

Given the illegal invasion of (Kremlin chief Vladimir, n.) Putin in Ukraine and the misuse of energy as a weapon, strengthening our energy security is an absolute priority,” Economic Affairs Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg said on Thursday that he will become an energy exporter by 2040.

Economy Minister: “Putin paid opponents of fracking”
“To do that, we need to explore all the possibilities available to us through solar, wind, oil and gas,” said Rees-Mogg. The lifting of the moratorium makes it possible to search for sources of domestic gas. The minister is seen as an opponent of green energy and has repeatedly questioned the causes of climate change. During a parliamentary debate on Thursday, the economy minister referred to previous media reports that anti-fracking opponents were “financed by Mr Putin’s regime.”

Fracking uses pressure and a mixture of water and chemicals to extract gas or oil from rock layers (see video below), posing environmental hazards. A moratorium was imposed in Britain in 2019 and the Conservative Party had pledged in its election manifesto to end fracking.

Prime Minister: “Check all options”
Now the new party leader and Prime Minister Liz Truss defended the repeal. “Fracking part of the energy mix, we need to explore all options,” said the conservative politician on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. “There shouldn’t be an option off the table to improve our energy security, because that’s the biggest problem we face.”
