The Guardia Civil, the Spanish police, broke up the largest drug smuggling ring in the country on Friday. The detectives seized 14 tons of hashish from Morocco. 49 people were arrested. The operation, which has been running since December 2021, involved about 400 police officers.
The Guardia Civil said in a statement that the gang is considered the largest of its kind in Spain and has regularly smuggled up to 20 tons of hashish per month from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula.
The smugglers were heavily armed, police said, as rival gangs often attempt to steal the drugs. They arrived on the southern Spanish coast near Cadiz and along the Guadalquivir River.
Gang was well organized
The drug gang was well organized with separate groups responsible for loading, fast motorboats, fuel supplies and food supplies, according to the Guardia Civil.
About 400 police officers were involved in the operation, which began in December 2021 after authorities discovered the gang, the AP news agency reported.
