The General Secretary of the Italian Social Democrats will lead the formation until a congress is convened to make way for “the new generations”
Democratic Party (PD) general secretary, former Prime Minister Enrico Letta, resigned on Monday at the head of his formation after the poor results of the elections held in Italy on Sunday. However, he will continue to drive the formation for the coming weeks until a congress is convened to elect his replacement, to which he will not appear. “It’s time for the new generations,” he said at a press conference.
The PD got 19% of the vote, against 26% for Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy, despite the fact that until a few weeks ago both parties were battling for first place.
Letta thus takes responsibility for the electoral debacle, accentuated by the decision not to join forces with the Five Star Movement to form a left front. A strategy that runs counter to the strategy adopted by the right and which, thanks to the union of the Brothers of Italy with La Liga and Forza Italia, will enjoy an absolute majority in Congress. Italian electoral law favors coalitions.
“The voters have said their part and I hope that from now on we can work on a better alternative than what has been done so far,” he said, assuring that his party will have a strong opposition to the next right-wing government. “We will not allow Italy to leave the heart of Europe, where it belongs,” he said.
