St. Margarethen – Mystery of the Lungau Church Tower Time Capsule Solved

Date:

Last October, a mysterious object was discovered during the renovation of the church tower in St. Margarethen in Lungau. The archdiocese archives have now provided the solution to the Lungau riddle.

During the renovation of the roof of the church tower in St. Margarethen in Lungau last year, something was found: weathered paper in a tube, the letters barely legible. In addition, three Heller coins were packed. The capsule was stuck in the old cross of the church tower, which was being renovated.

The parish wanted to know more about the mysterious vessel. However, wind and weather played a bad role on the document. “Unfortunately, most of the message on the fragments is no longer legible. The information is very sparse,” explains the parish assistant of St. Margarethen, Christian Schober. Almost a year later, the mystery of the time capsule has been solved. Schober had given the tube to the Archdiocese for this.

The Archdiocese gave the answer
Archives were searched, and an archdiocesan power of attorney for the consecration of the tower cross of May 13, 1913, was soon found. The capsule with paper and coins was probably deposited on the occasion of the new church tower cross in 1913. The three Heller coins and a barely legible signature on the document of the then St. Margarethen pastor Martin Jud confirmed the suspicion. Further proof: The coins have a total value of 13 Heller and Jud worked as a pastor from 1899 to 1924.

On the occasion of the dedication of the church tower last October, another time capsule was prepared for posterity. This time, photos and letters from the community were packed in the capsule. Better this time and supposedly safe.
