Fled from US – Putin grants citizenship to whistleblowers

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Monday granting former US intelligence official Edward Snowden Russian citizenship. Snowden, 39, fled the United States and was granted asylum in Russia after revealing classified files in 2013.

The documents had revealed extensive domestic and international surveillance operations conducted by the US National Security Agency (NSA), where he worked as a contractor. For years, US authorities have demanded that Snowden return to the United States to face criminal charges for espionage.

Russian President Putin’s decree states: “Edward Joseph Snowden, born June 21, 1983 in the United States of America” will be included in the list of new Russian citizens.
