Although the lack of measures to contain the corona virus suggests that there will be no end to the pandemic for the time being. In fact, the opposite is true, a look at wastewater data and hospitals shows.
It is no longer possible to determine exactly how many new infections there are in Austria every day – and therefore it is no longer possible to display a reliable infection curve. Regular and especially extensive testing is hardly done anymore. And yet, as reported, new infections in the five-digit range were recorded for Monday alone.
The number of cases increases “significantly” in all age groups
How high the number of unreported cases is can only be guessed at. For that reason, the forecast consortium has not made any predictions about the number of new infections and incidence for some time. In principle it is not necessary. How the spread of the coronavirus is developing is also apparent from other data, such as wastewater data and especially bed occupancy. And it should be noted that the number of cases is increasing “significantly” in all age groups, as the consortium explained.
“This development is in line with the expected acceleration of the infection process due to seasonality (relatively cool September) and higher contact frequencies at school and work since the end of the holiday period.” The lack of mitigating measures such as school tests and quarantine requirements would also contribute to the dynamics. It is almost certain that this trend will continue in the coming weeks. And that also means that the situation in hospitals will deteriorate further.
Use in hospitals continues to rise
Accordingly, for the last forecast day, October 12, 1200 to 1963 beds occupied by corona patients in normal wards are expected. However, the lower value has already been exceeded – according to Tuesday’s figures, there were 1,291 patients in hospitals. The number of intensive care patients could also exceed 100 by October 12 – up to 120 intensive care patients are predicted. 75 people are currently in intensive care due to a corona infection.
