The birth of a child presents relationships with entirely new challenges – and therefore often tests. Lack of sleep, stress, lack of togetherness and the added financial burden can weigh on both her and him. A new study shows how long it takes men to recover from the ‘birth shock’ and be more satisfied in their relationships, and why things are better with the second child.
Previous research on the transition to parenthood and the associated changes in relationship satisfaction has mainly focused on mothers with their firstborns. However, Judith Mack and Lena Brunke from the Institute and Polyclinic for Occupational and Social Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden wanted to know how the birth of the child affects the man’s satisfaction in the relationship, with a particular emphasis on the differences between men, those who became fathers for the first time and those who had already had a second child.
