Fire alarm on Friday evening in the Tyrolean Oberland. A mountain of waste caught fire for unknown reasons on the site of a waste processing company in the Ötztal-Bahnhof (Imst district). As many as 130 emergency services fought the inferno for hours.
“We were warned at 4:17 a.m.,” Thomas Pichler, operations manager of the fire brigade, told the “Krone”. The light of the fire was visible from far away – “as far as Roppen”. When the first emergency services arrived at the scene of the fire, approximately 600 to 700 cubic meters of commercial waste stored there was already fully on fire on the north-facing site.
130 firefighters on duty
„The investigation so far has shown that the fire broke out in the waste pile and spread from there,” police said. About 130 firefighters fought the fire, according to operations manager Pichler.
“We have alerted other fire departments in the region to provide support,” Pichler continued. Ultimately, the fire brigades of Ötztal-Bahnhof, Haiming, Haimingerberg, Silz, Roppen and Imst were in action. “The collaboration with the other fire brigades went excellently,” praises the operations manager.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing
According to police, the cause of the fire is currently unclear. The corresponding investigations are still ongoing. Ultimately, the waste was removed with excavators. “Fire out” wasn’t until around 10am. Fortunately no one was injured.
