Sweden discovers a fourth leak in Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipeline

Authorities have ruled out the possibility that “a foreign power” is behind the alleged sabotage

The Swedish Coast Guard discovered a new gas leak in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines on Thursday, bringing the total number of leaks to four, Swedish TV’s Channel 4 reported.

“Another gas leak has been discovered in the Baltic Sea, the coastguard confirms. This means that a total of four leaks have been found in Nord Stream 1 and 2,” the aforementioned chain said during a live broadcast. Two of the Nord Stream leaks occurred in the Baltic Sea area belonging to Denmark, and another two in the area belonging to Sweden.

The Swedish Police Intelligence Unit (SÄPO) has taken over the investigation into the gas leaks, ruling out the possibility that “a foreign power” is behind the sabotage.

During the day, Denmark, Poland, the United States and Norway expressed suspicions during the day that the leaks in the gas pipeline were the result of sabotage. Swedish seismologists went further, confirming explosions in the area hours before the leaks were confirmed.

The operator of the Nord Stream, Nord Stream AG, indicated on Tuesday that the damage sustained in the pipes late Monday is “unprecedented” after a gas leak in one of the sections of the Nord Stream 2 and a pressure loss in the Nord Stream. 1, without the causes being known for the time being.
